There are going to be bypolls for Shiroda, Mandrem and Mapusa Assembly seats on April 23. The bye-elections for these seats will be with the Lok Sabha elections in the state.

A senior official of the State Legislative Department said, "After the demise of Chief Minister Parrikar, the ruling coalition will have to make a claim before the governor after choosing his leader, there will be a letter of support in it." Former defense minister Parrikar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Goa after winning Panaji in 2017. Panjim MLA Sidharth Kunkolinkar resigned on May 10, 2017 to deliver Parrikar assembly, after which the by-election was held.

In the beginning of this year, the number of the House has increased to 36 due to the resignation of BJP legislator Francis D'Souza and Parrikar's death on Sunday and two Congress legislators Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte last year.

After the news of Parrikar's demise, coalition allies have convened emergency meetings. Three MLAs from the Goa Forward Party headed by Vijay Sardesai and three MGP MLAs are sitting separately.
